“Where the Spirit of the Lord is there is liberty”

“God who gave us life gave us liberty. Can the liberties of a nation be secure when we have removed a conviction that these liberties are the gift of God?”

-Thomas Jefferson

The secret of American justice, freedom, and prosperity has always been in our acknowledgement of and submission to the authority of Almighty God.  His laws are righteous and just.  He is perfect and when we follow His rules, life is good.  It is when we rebel and sin that we make life worse for ourselves and others.  When we cease to be moral to one another we create an environment of chaos and fear, out of which horrible rulers rise.  It was with this in mind that William Penn said,

“Men, in a word, must necessarily be controlled either by a power within them or by a power without them; either by the word of God, or by the strong arm of man; either by the Bible, or by the bayonet.”

It is against a backdrop of a culture that has tried its best to ignore, push aside, and openly spit in the face of God that our government has begun in earnest to remove our liberties.  Long forgetting or choosing to ignore that citizens’ liberty is granted by God and not them, the government has removed the right to life if a mother chooses to abort her child.  They have declared the pursuit of happiness off limits if that pursuit means you earn a certain amount of money, or choose to support the wrong politician, or want to raise your children in an atmosphere free of sexual perversion.  And they are working behind the scenes, quietly, to take away liberty in its entirety.

It is not only predictable, it is certain: when man turns his back on God and His Word, the Bible, society greatly suffers or is ruined.  America is no different; she is not exempt.  As we have rebelled against a holy God, our country has suffered and will continue to unless we repent.  When those in authority have no respect for the Creator, they certainly have no respect for created man.

How can the media report this with a straight face?

This is rich.  The government is creating a panel of people to tell the government how it can stop spending so much money.  As Rush Limbaugh put it: “What is the liberals’ answer to out of control government spending?  You create more government to study it!”

Really, which is more ridiculous:

Asking a group of people to figure out how you spent trillions of dollars you don’t have and how you can stop it?

Expecting this commission to give the government the honest assessment that they are the ones at fault and to stop spending money they don’t have?

What this is all about is president Obama setting the stage for raising taxes.  He is going to pass the blame (as he does for everything) to someone else for raising taxes he promised he would not raise.  There is no point to this panel in more ways than one.  They will simply report back to Obama that he must raise taxes on the middle class as part of a “broad, sweeping reform.”  The president then will say, “I had no choice.  We were in a mess that someone else made and I inherited, so I had to raise your taxes.”  And by the way, the mess started when his party took over congress and he voted for every spending increase he now condemns.  It was his party that gave us the housing crisis and its long-term effects, and it is he and his party that refuse to fix the problem.

Long story short: liberal economics never work.  And you will get a great view of this for the next three years.  The good news is, three years is all it hast to last.

Read his lips: no new taxes…wait…

Remember when Barack Obama campaigned strongly and unmistakably that he would not – and I mean NOT – raise taxes on anybody making less than $250,000 a year?  (Then it was 200k, then back to 250, but I digress.)

“I can make a firm pledge.  Under my plan, no family making less than $250,000 a year will see any form of tax increase. Not your income tax. Not your payroll tax. Not your capital gains taxes. Not any of your taxes.”

It was one of the big reasons Obama was elected.  It sounded so good…tax cuts for most of the country and the punishing of the rich.  It all rested, however, on the assumption that Obama would follow through with his promise.

Conservatives like myself knew from the start this was not going to happen.  We had heard it all before from certain other Clintons – I mean presidents.  It was not hard to understand that someone who wanted to spend so wildly it would make the Bush deficits look like child’s play would have a big-time budget deficit on his hands.  And faced with the choice to cut everyone’s taxes (especially the rich, since they have more money to spend) or raise everyone’s taxes, we knew what liberals always choose: the latter.

And here we are a year and a half later.  The spending has surpassed any other president by record amounts, staggering amounts.  We are in debt so deep we are in real danger of bankrupting ourselves.  And with the economy still lagging, the president is about to make a very predictable move.

“If your deficit commission comes back and says we would recommend raising taxes on households earning less than $250,000 a year, would you accept that as part of a larger deal?” asked Bloomberg reporters in a Business Week article.

“I don’t want to prejudge the commission because the whole point of it is to make sure that all ideas are on the table, and let’s see what folks can come up with.  What I want to do is to be completely agnostic in terms of solutions.”

Um, Mr. President, you did promise.  You even promised from the floor of the house last year.  So why are you “agnostic” about it?  This should have been a one word answer, “No.”

Make no mistake, your taxes will go up.  The administration may have to hide them to get them to pass congress (such as taxing your healthcare benefits or including the money your employer pays in social security and other taxes and insurance as part of your income), but you will be forced to fork over your hard earned money to finance his spending spree.

Hope and change never felt so good!

The Blame Game

Ok, I joked about it, but this is getting ridiculous. Have you ever heard someone blame another for more problems than Barack Obama has? This is the sign of someone who is not a true leader. Leaders get results. They step up and take responsibility. They don’t make excuses. Leaders solve problems, not complain about them.

But here you see a man who has been trained to agitate and rile people up in opposition to whatever the issue at hand is. Community organizers gin up discontent and then make demands of those in power. Well, now he is in power. And he doesn’t know what to do. Oh sure, he is doing as he promised in remaking the country. But all he knows is what he was taught by elites in the ivy league, and by communist and Marxist mentors (see Davis, Frank Marshall and Wright, Jeremiah). And when he has tried all of these “great ideas” he will see that they fail, even as they now are. But he will not be able to accept it. It must be someone else’s fault.

Obama is like the man at a vaudeville show who says, “Man, the crowd was so angry at the previous guy’s act that they kept booing all through mine.”

Obama will continue to foist his troubles onto former president Bush. But this is not what Americans want. We want someone to lead, someone to find solutions to problems, someone to accept responsibility.

It is sad. But Obama is who he is. He has not changed. If America had done its homework in November we wouldn’t have to deal with this. But we were too caught up in fairytale visions of hope and change and everyone holding hands & singing. Now we are facing the consequences of our decisions: the spending of our money so high that it will put the next three generations in debt they likely can never repay, the continued decline of the economy, higher taxes, and less freedom. And while the president will continue to whine about his predecessor, America will trudge slowly on in misery. It will be a very hard lesson to learn, and I surely hope we learn it, before the land of the free loses her freedom.
